Food delivery platform Zomato has received a tax notice of ₹803 crore from the GST authorities for lapse in payment of GST on delivery charges for the period from October 2019 to March 2022. The demand includes an amount of ₹401.7 crore as GST and equal penalty alongside interest.
Authorities argue that these services fall under the category of “services” and thus attract 18% GST, while Zomato argues that the service is being provided directly to customers by delivery partners, and the company just acts as a facilitator. Zomato, along with legal and tax advisors, plans to challenge the notice.
