The Indian Stock Market Today concluded the trading day on a mixed note, with benchmark indices showing minimal change as gains in the automotive sector were offset by significant losses in the IT and FMCG packs.
The NIFTY 50 managed to eke out a minor gain, closing at 24,741.00, up by a mere 6.70 points or 0.03% from its previous close. In contrast, the BSE SENSEX finished slightly in the red, shedding 7.25 points to settle at 80,710.76.
The broader market indices also reflected this subdued sentiment, with the NIFTY 100, NIFTY 200, and NIFTY 500 all posting marginal gains of under 0.05%.
A clear sectoral divide defined the day’s trading activity. The NIFTY AUTO index emerged as the top performer, surging by 1.25%. This rally was led by strong performances from key automobile stocks.
Eicher Motors was a standout gainer, climbing 2.41%, closely followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), which rose by 2.34%. Maruti also contributed to the positive momentum with a solid gain of 1.64%.
On the flip side, the technology and consumer goods sectors faced considerable selling pressure. The NIFTY IT index was the day’s biggest loser, plummeting by 1.44%, while the NIFTY FMCG index also fell sharply by 1.42%.
This downturn was mirrored in the performance of heavyweight stocks within these sectors. ITC was a significant drag on the market, declining by 1.92%. Similarly, HCLTECH dropped by 1.61%, contributing to the weakness in the IT space.
Other notable sectoral movements included a 1.16% fall in the NIFTY REALTY index. However, sectors like NIFTY METAL and NIFTY PSU BANK managed to close in the green, providing some support to the market. The financial services space also saw modest gains, with the NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES 25/50 index up by 0.24%.
