Indian stock indices concluded the trading session on 8 October 2025 with slight losses, driven by a pronounced divergence between defensive technology stocks and struggling cyclical sectors.
The broader market reflected this weakness, as key indices such as the NIFTY 100, NIFTY 200, and NIFTY 500 all finished the day in the red.
The BSE Sensex experienced a fractional dip, declining by under two-tenths of a per cent by the time markets closed.
Despite the overall negativity, the decline in the Sensex was considerably cushioned by strong performance in the information technology (IT) sector.
The NIFTY IT index proved resilient, recording strong gains and rising by more than one and a half per cent.
This sectoral strength translated directly into the list of Sensex top performers. IT heavyweights were prominent among the gainers, with Infosys (INFY), Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), TECHM, and HCLTECH all posting significant rises.
Leading the charge, however, was TITAN, which recorded the largest percentage increase among all Sensex components.
Sectoral Drag Pulls Sensex Lower:
The gains in technology were ultimately insufficient to counterbalance heavy selling pressure observed in other key market segments. Several sectors saw notable declines.
The steepest percentage decline among tracked indices was seen in NIFTY REALTY. Additionally, the automotive sector proved a major headwind for the indices. The NIFTY AUTO index declined notably.
This weakness was visible in the Sensex losers list. TATAMOTORS recorded the most significant percentage loss of the day.
Other stocks contributing substantially to the downside included M&M, ULTRACEMCO, and BEL.
Beyond Auto and Realty, sectors such as NIFTY PHARMA and NIFTY PSU BANK also finished the day lower.
