The Indian stock market such as Sensex and Nifty 50 concluded the trading session on October 10th with a decidedly positive tone, reflecting broad-based buying interest across several key sectors.

Both benchmark indices recorded increases, with the NIFTY 50 registering a gain of 0.41% and the BSE SENSEX advancing 0.40%.

The closing bell marked an encouraging session for investors, with the NIFTY 500 index also moving higher by 0.41%.

Drivers of the Day

The upward trajectory of the major indices was largely supported by significant movements in financial services, auto, and utility stocks.

Within the list of SENSEX gainers, the banking sector demonstrated robust performance. State Bank of India (SBIN) was a top contributor, rising notably by 2.16%, while Axis Bank also closed higher, advancing 1.08%.

The automotive sector provided further momentum, with Maruti recording a substantial increase of 1.87%.

Additionally, power and utilities stocks showed strength; NTPC climbed 1.07%, Power Grid Corporation (POWERGRID) gained 1.05%, and BEL also finished in the green, rising 0.94%.

Sectoral Strength Highlighted

Analysis of sectoral indices revealed that Realty and PSU Banking were the undisputed leaders of the session. The NIFTY REALTY index and the NIFTY PSU BANK index both emerged as joint top performers, each posting gains of 1.67%.

The healthcare segment also saw noteworthy gains. The NIFTY PHARMA index advanced by 1.29%, while the NIFTY HEALTHCARE INDEX closed 1.02% higher.

Furthermore, the NIFTY MIDSMALL FINANCIAL SERVICES index registered a healthy gain of 0.85%. The NIFTY AUTO index added 0.50% by the close.

Underperformance in Technology and Metals

Despite the overall positive market sentiment, certain sectors experienced selling pressure. The technology space showed weakness, impacting the broader market momentum. Among the selected SENSEX losers, TCS faced a significant decline, dropping 1.10%. Tech Mahindra (TECHM) also finished lower, decreasing by 0.62%.

The metals sector also lagged behind the broader gains. Tata Steel (TATASTEEL) recorded the sharpest fall among the SENSEX losers, decreasing by 1.47% during the session.

Broader Market Context

Beyond the headline indices, the general market breadth remained positive. The NIFTY 200 index advanced 0.40%, and the NIFTY 100 index also closed higher, moving up by 0.38%.
