Indian equity markets displayed steady resilience in the stock market today, with benchmark indices ending in the green despite significant volatility in the technology space.
The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex climbed 266.47 points, or 0.32%, to close at 83,580.40, while the Nifty 50 managed to settle at 25,693.70 with a modest gain of 0.20%.
The overall mood remained cautiously optimistic as investors appeared to pivot toward defensive plays and consumption-led sectors.
The sector performance was a tale of two halves. Leading the charge was the Nifty FMCG index, which surged a remarkable 2.27%, emerging as the standout performer of the session.
This rally was powered by heavyweights like ITC, which topped the top gainers list with a 5.09% jump, and Hindustan Unilever, which rose 2.96%.
Banking also provided much-needed support; while the Nifty Bank saw a marginal gain of 0.09%, Kotak Bank was a major pillar of strength, climbing 3.35%.
Additionally, the Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Private Bank indices ended in positive territory, reflecting a healthy appetite for domestic-oriented themes.
On the flip side, the Nifty IT index acted as the primary drag on the market, shedding 1.47% as global sentiment weighed on tech majors. The Nifty MidSmall IT &
Telecom index faced even steeper cuts, falling 1.55%. Among the top losers, Tata Consultancy Services and Tech Mahindra saw significant selling pressure, declining 1.69% and 1.64% respectively.
Other prominent names like Adani Ports and Asian Paints also faced headwinds, contributing to the list of laggards for the day.
The day’s trade suggests a clear shift toward “safe haven” consumption stocks amid broader market uncertainty. While the BSE Sensex Next 50 slipped by 0.34%, indicating some exhaustion in the broader market, the BSE Bharat 22 Index managed a gain of 0.33%, showing selective interest in state-backed enterprises.
