Dalal Street witnessed a wave of optimism in the stock market today as domestic indices surged, driven by strong buying in heavyweight banking and realty stocks.
The Sensex jumped 650.39 points to close at a robust 83,277.15, while the Nifty 50 gained 0.83% to end the day at 25,682.75.
The overall market mood remained upbeat throughout the session, reflecting investor confidence as the Nifty Bank surged over 760 points to cross the 60,900 mark.
The rally was largely orchestrated by financial heavyweights. The Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Psu Bank indices both saw significant traction, rising 1.19% and 1.50% respectively.
This surge in banking was complemented by the Nifty Realty index, which emerged as a top performer with a gain of 1.59%.
Additionally, the Bse Bharat 22 index climbed 1.35%, indicating broad-based interest in state-run enterprises and large-cap leaders.
However, the sector performance was not uniformly positive. The Nifty Auto and Nifty Media sectors faced some selling pressure, ending the day in the red as investors rotated capital into financials and infrastructure.
Among the top gainers on the Sensex, Power Grid Corporation was the star performer, surging 4.45%. Banking giants Hdfc Bank and Axis Bank also provided significant heavy-lifting for the indices, gaining 2.19% and 1.83% respectively.
Other notable movers included National Thermal Power Corporation (Ntpc) and Adani Ports, both benefiting from a positive sentiment in the energy and infrastructure space.
On the flip side, the list of top losers was headlined by Tech Mahindra, which shed 1.44%.
The auto sector also struggled, with Maruti and Mahindra & Mahindra ending lower by 1.17% and 0.69% respectively, as the sector dealt with cooling demand expectations. Bajaj Finance also faced a slight retreat, closing down 1.10%.
