It was a positive day for the stock market today as Indian benchmarks, the Sensex and the Nifty 50, maintained their upward trajectory.
Investors displayed a healthy appetite for risk, buoyed by strong performances in core sectors, despite some cooling in the technology space.
The Bse Sensex closed 283.29 points higher at 83,734.25, while the Nifty 50 finished the session at 25,819.35, marking a steady gain of 0.37%.
The broader market also participated in the rally, with the Nifty Next 50 and the Bse Sensex Next 50 outperforming the frontline indices by gaining 0.67% and 0.69% respectively.
The sector performance was dominated by Metals and Public Sector Undertaking (Psu) Banks. The Nifty Metal index surged by 1.33%, fueled by a strong showing from Tata Steel, which rose nearly 3% as global commodity sentiment remained firm.
Similarly, the Nifty Psu Bank index climbed 1.31%, reflecting renewed investor confidence in state-run lenders.
Consumer-facing stocks also joined the party, as the Nifty Fmcg index rose by 1.21%.
Heavyweight Itc emerged as one of the top gainers on the Sensex, jumping 2.21%, alongside other major contributors like Reliance, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Larsen & Toubro.
The banking sector remained a pillar of support, with the Nifty Bank closing up 0.62% and Axis Bank gaining 1.47%.
On the flip side, the technology sector remained the primary drag on the market’s momentum. The Nifty It index fell by 1.23%, making it the weakest sectoral performer of the day.
Major players featured prominently among the top losers, with Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and Hcl Tech all shedding over 1%. Adani Ports also faced some selling pressure, closing 1% lower. Outside the main index, Eternal saw a sharper decline of 1.53%.
