Indian equity benchmarks witnessed a sharp correction on Friday, with the stock market today ending deep in the red as a wave of selling swept through nearly every sector.
The BSE Sensex tumbled 961.42 points, or 1.17%, to close at 81,287.19, while the Nifty 50 gave up the 25,200 level, sliding 317.90 points to finish at 25,178.65. The overall mood was one of caution, as investors appeared to trim positions amid broad-based weakness across the board.
Sector performance was predominantly negative, with interest-rate sensitive sectors and consumption stocks bearing the brunt of the onslaught.
The Nifty Realty index was the biggest laggard of the day, shedding 2.26%, followed by the Nifty Auto index, which dropped 1.86%.
The heavyweight Nifty Financial Services and Nifty FMCG indices also faced significant pressure, declining 1.64% and 1.69% respectively.
Even the Nifty Bank could not escape the carnage, closing 1.08% lower at 60,529.00.
Among the top losers, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries led the decline, falling 2.61%. Telecom giant Bharti Airtel and Mahindra & Mahindra also saw heavy selling, losing 2.53% and 2.42% respectively.
Other notable names that dragged the indices lower included Bajaj Finserv, InterGlobe Aviation (Indigo), and Maruti Suzuki.
In a sea of red, a few Information Technology stocks managed to provide a silver lining. HCL Technologies and Infosys emerged as the top gainers on the Sensex, rising 1.22% and 0.82% respectively, as investors sought refuge in defensive IT names. Lifestyle retailer Trent also bucked the trend, gaining 1.10%.
