MoD Signs Rs 5,083 Cr Deals with HAL and Russia for Choppers & Missiles

Ministry of Defence (MoD) has officially signed a significant contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the acquisition of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III (Maritime Role).

The deal, valued at Rs 2,901 crore, was inked on March 3, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Strengthening Maritime Security The new twin-engine helicopters are destined for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and are designed to provide state-of-the-art capabilities superior to existing airborne platforms.

These helicopters will be equipped with operational role equipment, an engineering support package, and performance-based logistics support.

Their induction is set to bolster the ICG’s ability to protect offshore installations, artificial islands, and the marine environment, while also ensuring the safety of fishermen at sea.

A Boost for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ Procured under the “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured)” category, this project is a major win for domestic industry. The project is expected to:

  • Involve a supply chain of more than 200 MSMEs.
  • Generate approximately 65 lakh man-hours of employment.
  • Further the government’s commitment to the Make-in-India initiative and self-reliance in defence.

Broader Defence Context The HAL contract was part of a larger Rs 5,083 crore procurement push by the MoD.

Alongside the helicopter deal, the Ministry also signed a Rs 2,182 crore contract with Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport for Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch – Shtil missiles and associated equipment for the Indian Navy.

These missiles are intended to enhance the air defence capabilities of frontline warships against diverse aerial threats.
