Dalal Street Bloodbath: Sensex Plunges 1,300 Points; Titan & SBI Among Top Losers

It was a bruising day for investors on Dalal Street as the stock market today witnessed a sea of red, with benchmark indices buckling under intense selling pressure. The BSE Sensex suffered a massive blow, crashing 1,312.91 points, or 1.70%, to close at 76,015.28.

The broader Nifty 50 did not fare much better, slipping below the 23,900 mark to end at 23,815.85, marking a decline of 1.49%. Market sentiment remained dampened throughout the session as heavyweights across sectors saw significant offloading.

The sector performance painted a grim picture, with almost all major indices ending in negative territory. The Nifty Consumer Durables index was the biggest laggard, plummeting 3.73% as discretionary spending sentiment appeared to take a hit.

The Nifty Realty space followed closely, dropping over 3%, while Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Media indices each shed approximately 2.5%. Nifty Oil & Gas also faced heat, sliding 2.24% as heavyweights in the space struggled.

In a rare show of resilience, the Nifty Midsmall IT & Telecom index managed to buck the trend, gaining over 1% to provide a small pocket of green in an otherwise bleeding market.

The list of top losers was led by Titan Company, which saw a sharp correction of 6.83%. High-profile names like IndiGo, State Bank of India, and Bharti Airtel also faced the brunt of the sell-off, falling between 4% and 5%. Even market bellwether Reliance Industries could not escape the carnage, ending 3.31% lower.

On the flip side, a few defensive stocks managed to stay afloat amidst the chaos. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries emerged as the top gainer on the Sensex, rising 1.36%. FMCG major Hindustan Unilever and Adani Ports also managed to post modest gains of 0.85% and 0.36%, respectively, as investors sought safety in less volatile names.
