Indian stock market ended on a weak note with losses on all key indices. The BSE Sensex tanked and settled at 77,690 as the sentiment in the market turned bearish.
Nifty 50 also fell, with the day’s close at 23,559. Significant drags in Hero MotoCorp were seen as its stock declined by over 4%. Other losses of over 3% were registered at Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Hindalco. The decline was accompanied by losses in Tata Steel, Eicher Motors, Adani Ports, and BEL.
Major indices in the banking space were seen closing in the red as Nifty Bank was closed at 50,275 marking a fall after the big crash of ICICI Bank that emerged as the worst performer among the stocks in the banking segment. Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and SBI could not provide the much-needed support for Nifty Bank to close in the green.
Nifty Next 50 stayed more or less in line with the broader market index and closed at 67,249. The top losers were led by HAL down over 3%. IRFC and NHPC were next, having shed over 3%. Other significant stocks that led the declines are Adani Energy Solutions, BHEL, and Motherson.
The BSE 200 index also ended in the red at 10,788. The key movers in that direction were Suzlon, which skidded by more than 8%, Central Bank of India that more than 5%, and UCO Bank that fell by more than 4%. Biocon also skidded by more than 4%, which was also felt in the BSE 200.
Generally, today’s session reflected a downtrend across the Indian stock market and some severe declines into sectors like banking and automotive along with energy, hinting that it’s a cautious outlook for investors.
