NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a Navratna Enterprise of the Government of India, has announced the appointment of Shri Bhupender Gupta (DIN: 06940941) as its new Chairman & Managing Director. Shri Gupta assumed charge of the position on 4th September 2025.
The Ministry of Power appointed Shri Gupta through Order No. 9/6/2024-NHPC, dated 4th September 2025. His tenure is for a period of five years from the date he assumed charge, or until his superannuation on 31st October 2030, or until further orders, whichever occurs earliest.
Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh (DIN: 10718481), who previously served as Chairman & Managing Director, has resigned from his position in light of this appointment.
Shri Bhupender Gupta brings an extensive career of more than 34 years to NHPC Limited, with 31 years specifically within Power Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs). He has an MBA in operations management and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
His professional journey commenced with ACC Ltd in 1991, and he began his CPSU career by joining SJVN in 1995, where he served for 12 years in various capacities.
During his time at SJVN, he was responsible for the planning, erection, commissioning, and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) of the electromechanical equipment for the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant, which is identified as India’s largest operational hydroelectric project.
He later held the positions of Operational Head and Additional Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at two REC companies, including REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd.
Subsequently, Shri Gupta joined REC Ltd. in March 2007, where he was involved in the project financing of Hydro and Thermal projects for about six years. He later held the positions of Operational Head and Additional Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at two REC companies, including REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd.. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd..
In these roles, he oversaw execution, project management, contract management, and consultancy for power sector projects across , successfully completing significant Government of India flagship schemes such as Saubhagya, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), and PMDP.
In December 2020, Shri Gupta moved to Bhutan on deputation as Director (Technical) at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority, where he led construction activities and resolved long-standing contractual and other issues. Before joining NHPC, Shri Gupta took charge as Director (Technical) at THDCIL on 9th June 2023.
