The stock market today witnessed a day of consolidation as the benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, ended with marginal losses, reflecting a cautious yet resilient mood among investors.
Despite the minor pullback in the headline numbers, the broader market sentiment remained relatively stable, with several pockets of the economy showing significant strength.
The BSE Sensex edged lower by 20.46 points to settle at 84,675.08, while the Nifty 50 closed nearly flat at 25,938.85, losing just 3.25 points. While the primary indices stayed quiet, the BSE Sensex Next 50 and the BSE Bharat 22 Index managed to stay in the green, gaining 0.04% and 0.50% respectively, indicating a selective appetite for mid-cap and state-owned entities.
Sector performance was a tale of two halves. The Nifty Metal index was the star performer of the day, surging 2.03%. This rally was spearheaded by Tata Steel, which finished as one of the top gainers, rising 2.03%.
The automotive sector also enjoyed a smooth ride, with the Nifty Auto index gaining 1.08%, supported by a 2.00% jump in Mahindra & Mahindra.
Banking stocks provided much-needed support to the indices. The Nifty Psu Bank index climbed 1.69%, while the Nifty Bank and BSE Bankex also finished in positive territory.
Axis Bank and State Bank Of India were among the prominent gainers, helping to offset losses elsewhere.
However, the tech sector proved to be a major drag on the market’s progress. The Nifty It index fell 0.74%, weighed down by top losers such as Infosys, which shed 1.28%, and Hcl Tech, which dropped 0.92%.
The pressure extended to the Nifty Mid-Small It & Telecom sector, which declined nearly 1%. Other sectors facing heat included Nifty Realty and Nifty Consumer Durables, both of which closed lower as investors locked in profits.
The market appears to be in a phase of healthy consolidation, with investors rotating capital from high-growth tech stocks into value-oriented sectors like metals and public sector banks.
