Sensex Tops 84k as Media & PSU Banks Lead the Charge; SBI Soars 7%

The stock market today witnessed a robust performance as bulls remained firmly in control on Dalal Street. Both benchmark indices ended the session on a high note, reflecting a positive mood among investors.

The BSE Sensex climbed over 485 points to close at 84,065.75, while the Nifty 50 surged by 0.68% to settle at 25,867.30.

The overall sentiment was bolstered by broad-based buying, particularly in the banking and media sectors, which helped the indices maintain their winning momentum throughout the day.

The sector performance was a clear highlight of the day, with the Nifty Media index leading the rally with a staggering gain of 4.37%. Close on its heels was the Nifty PSU Bank index, which jumped 3.34%, signaling strong investor confidence in public sector lenders.

Real estate also saw significant traction, with the Nifty Realty index rising 2.61%.

Even defensive sectors and healthcare participated in the rally; the Nifty MidSmall Healthcare index rose 2.27%, while the Nifty Pharma and Metal indices also posted healthy gains of 1.50% and 1.56% respectively.

The Nifty Bank also provided substantial support to the benchmarks, closing nearly 1% higher at 60,669.35.

Among the top gainers on the Sensex, State Bank of India was the undisputed star, surging 7.46% following the broader rally in state-owned banks.

Consumer-focused stocks also performed well, with Titan rising 2.78% and UltraTech Cement gaining 2.52%. Tata Steel added 2.56%, buoyed by positive movement in the metals space.

Other notable performers included Kotak Mahindra Bank and Larsen & Toubro, which both saw steady buying interest.

However, the session was not without its laggards. The top losers list was topped by Power Grid Corporation of India, which shed 1.11% as investors rotated away from power and utility stocks.

Heavyweights like ITC and National Thermal Power Corporation also faced selling pressure, declining 1.07% and 0.89% respectively. ICICI Bank ended marginally lower by 0.68%, bucking the trend seen in the rest of the banking pack.
