In a move set to redefine the landscape of digital transactions, Pine Labs (NSE: PINELABS; BSE: 544606) announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI on February 19, 2026, to pioneer the era of “Agentic Commerce” in India.
This partnership aims to integrate OpenAI’s advanced API models directly into Pine Labs’ core merchant ecosystem, shifting the fintech industry from simple “deterministic” processing to complex “probabilistic” reasoning.
The collaboration comes at a critical juncture as India’s fintech sector is projected to reach a $1.5 trillion valuation this year, with annual digital payment volumes already exceeding 180 billion transactions.
Pine Labs is leveraging this massive real-time payment market to scale frontier AI, moving beyond passive systems that merely follow instructions to building an active, intelligent layer for business.
B Amrish Rau, CEO of Pine Labs, emphasized that this shift represents a fundamental evolution, stating that the company’s infrastructure is no longer just a participant in a trade but a “driver of efficiency and growth”.
By embedding OpenAI’s intelligence, Pine Labs is engineering a “Reasoning Layer” capable of understanding context and weighing probabilities within secure financial guardrails.
This new architecture allows users to delegate entire financial lifecycles to intelligent agents rather than just searching for products.
These agents can autonomously navigate high-stakes tasks, such as:
- Self-negotiating supplier terms.
- Optimizing cross-border settlement cycles.
- Managing recurring bill payments.
Oliver Jay, Managing Director, International at OpenAI, noted that the partnership turns complex financial workflows into “seamless, agentic experiences at scale” by combining OpenAI’s reasoning capabilities with Pine Labs’ deep merchant infrastructure.
The collaboration is designed to work in tandem with India’s sophisticated payment systems, including UPI Reserve Pay. While OpenAI provides the decision-making intelligence, the underlying payment rails serve as the execution layer for regulated financial finality.
To ensure safety in high-stakes environments, all AI-driven workflows operate within Pine Labs’ enterprise-grade security architecture, featuring strict data isolation, encryption, and human-in-the-loop oversight.
Pine Labs is opening this “agentic stack” to its developer ecosystem, enabling third-party innovators to build next-generation, AI-native fintech applications on a trusted foundation.
