Sea of Red on Dalal Street: Sensex Crashes 1,200 Points as Bears Take Charge

It was a bruising day for the Indian stock market today as a sea of red washed over the exchanges, leaving investors with little room to hide.

The Bse Sensex witnessed a massive sell-off, plunging 1,236 points to close at 82,498.14, representing a sharp 1.48% decline. The Nifty 50 mirrored this somber mood, slipping 365 points to finish the session at 25,454.35.

The overall sentiment remained decidedly bearish throughout the day, with the Bse Sensex Next 50 also taking a significant 1.80% hit, indicating that the pain was felt across both large-cap and mid-cap segments.

The sector performance was a stark reflection of the cautious mood on the floor.

Interest-rate sensitive sectors were among the hardest hit; Nifty Realty led the downward charge with a 2.56% drop, while Nifty Auto also faced heavy weather, sliding 2.10%.

The Nifty Media index didn’t fare much better, declining 2.23% as investors moved away from discretionary plays.

Even defensive pockets like Nifty FMCG and Nifty IT, which often provide a cushion during volatile sessions, ended the day in the red, losing 1.76% and 1.07% respectively.

Looking at individual stocks, the list of top losers was headlined by aviation major IndiGo, which saw its shares tumble 3.23%.

Retail giant Trent and cement heavyweight UltraTech Cement were also in the line of fire, both shedding over 2.8%. The heavy-duty segment was particularly weak, with Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), and Adani Ports all facing significant selling pressure.

Banking stocks added to the index’s woes as the Nifty Bank fell 1.32%, dragged down by notable losses in Kotak Bank and Reliance.

In a rare and telling sign of the market’s total lack of momentum, there were effectively no top gainers among the major Sensex constituents, highlighting the absolute dominance of the bears.
