Coal India Appoints B. Sairam as CMD; Eyes Solar, Critical Minerals Expansion

Coal India Limited (CIL), the public sector Maharatna coal mining behemoth, has ushered in new leadership with the appointment of Mr. B Sairam as its Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD). The leadership change took effect on 15 December 2025.

Mr. Sairam succeeds Mr. Sanoj Kumar Jha, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal, who held the interim charge as Chairman starting 1 November 2025, following the superannuation of Mr. P M Prasad on 31 October.

Bringing three and a half decades of experience as a coal mining veteran, Mr. Sairam previously headed Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a major coal producing subsidiary of CIL.

His expertise encompasses coal mine operations, planning, logistics, and regulatory affairs. Academically, he holds a degree in mining engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Raipur, and an MBA in Energy Management from NTPC School of Business.

Prior to his role at NCL, he served as Director (Technical) at Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), another coal-producing arm of CIL.

Upon assuming the top role, Mr. Sairam outlined a dual strategy focusing on traditional strengths while embracing the evolving energy landscape. He stressed that the company’s core focus remains increased coal production and improved quality coal supplies necessary for meeting the country’s energy demand.
