The Indian stock market today witnessed a cautious trading session, as investors chose to book profits at higher levels, leading to a slight retreat in the benchmark indices.
The BSE Sensex ended the day with a loss of 116.14 points, or 0.14%, to settle at 85,408.70. Similarly, the Nifty 50 showed a minor decline, shedding 35.05 points to close at 26,142.10. The overall mood reflected a period of consolidation as Dalal Street participants weighed global cues against domestic sectoral movements,.
Sector Performance: Media Gains as IT and Oil & Gas Drag
It was a mixed day for sector performance, with most indices ending in the red. The Nifty Media index was a lone bright spot among the majors, advancing by 0.44%.
Conversely, the Nifty Oil & Gas sector was a significant laggard, dropping 0.76%, while the Nifty IT and Nifty Pharma indices both cooled off by 0.51%. Consumer-facing sectors also felt the pinch, with the Nifty FMCG index sliding 0.42% as heavyweights faced selling pressure.
Key Movers: Trent Outperforms While Indigo and Sun Pharma Slide
Despite the broader sluggishness, certain stocks displayed remarkable resilience. Trent emerged as one of the prominent top gainers, surging 2.36%. Automobile giants Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra also found favour among buyers, gaining 0.79% and 0.35% respectively, alongside UltraTech Cement, which rose 0.73%.
On the other side of the ledger, the list of top losers was headlined by InterGlobe Aviation (Indigo), which fell 1.48%, and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, which declined 1.01%. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries also weighed on the Sensex, finishing 0.82% lower, while Asian Paints and Hindustan Unilever saw declines of roughly 0.80% each.
The marginal dip in the Nifty Bank, which fell 0.20% to close at 59,183.60, suggests that financial stocks are currently in a sideways trend. With the Nifty Next 50 and the BSE Sensex Next 50 also ending lower—the latter by 0.47%—the broader market sentiment remains one of “wait and watch”,.
