Hitachi Energy India Limited has received a significant order from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) to supply 30 units of 765-kilovolt (kV) 500 megavolt-ampere (MVA) single-phase transformers. This strategic contract reinforces Hitachi Energy’s position as India’s leading transformer manufacturer while supporting the country’s ambitious energy transition and grid modernization objectives.
High-Voltage Transformer Technology for National Grid Enhancement:
The 765 kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) AC transformers represent cutting-edge grid infrastructure technology designed to enhance power grid security, reliability, and efficiency. Once installed, these transformers will possess the capacity to transmit power equivalent to the average consumption of 30 million households across India, demonstrating the massive scale of this infrastructure investment.

Long-distance bulk power transfer is made possible by higher voltage transmission at 765 kV, which also drastically lowers operational costs and transmission losses, thus making electricity more cheap for customers. The technology reduces the number of required transmission lines, cutting land use and construction costs while simultaneously enhancing grid security through high capacity transmission capabilities.
Manufacturing Excellence and Local Production Commitment

All 30 transformer units will be manufactured at Hitachi Energy India’s specialized power transformer facility in Maneja, Vadodara, Gujarat, demonstrating the company’s continued commitment to local production and the ‘Make in India‘ initiative. The delivery timelines are strategically aligned with POWERGRID’s transmission network building plans, ensuring seamless integration into India’s expanding grid infrastructure.
This order reflects the substantial 15% annual growth in power transformer demand across India over the past two years, driven by the country’s energy transition ambitions and the increasing integration of renewable generation sources. The shift from project-based to program-based planning enables utilities to accommodate the greater addition of renewable energy sources and the electrification of industries and transportation sectors.
