JSW Energy Limited, a prominent player in India’s private power sector, has marked a significant milestone with the successful commissioning of the first 80 MW unit of its 240 MW Kutehr Hydro Electric Project (KHEP).

This achievement, announced on 2nd August 2025, underscores the company’s robust project execution capabilities and its unwavering commitment to advancing India’s renewable energy landscape.

Power supply from this unit has already commenced to the Haryana Power Purchase Centre, signalling a crucial step in supporting the state’s energy requirements.

The Kutehr Hydro Electric Project: A Green Energy Landmark

The Kutehr Hydro Electric Project is a 240 MW facility made up of three 80 MW units that is well situated in the Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh. Its development has been notably swift, earning it recognition as one of the fastest-built greenfield hydro projects in India.

Following the successful commissioning of the first 80 MW unit, which is now dispatching power to Haryana, the project continues its rapid progress. The second 80 MW unit has already achieved synchronisation with the grid and is currently undergoing its testing and trial run phases.

Importantly, a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) supports the Kutehr project. This agreement covers the entire 240 MW capacity at a levelised ceiling tariff of ₹4.50 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and is valid for an extensive period of 35 years, with provisions for extension.

The clean energy generated will be distributed to Haryana’s state distribution utilities, namely Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam. Mr. Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, highlighted the opportune timing of the commissioning, coinciding with the peak monsoon season, which allows the company to capitalise on high waterflow

JSW Energy’s Expanding Renewable Footprint

The commissioning of the Kutehr project significantly augments JSW Energy’s already substantial renewable energy portfolio. With this latest capacity addition, the company’s installed hydro capacity now stands at an impressive 1,471 MW.

This contributes to a diverse generation mix that also includes 2,157 MW of solar capacity and 3,562 MW of wind capacity. Collectively, renewables now constitute a significant 56% of JSW Energy’s total installed capacity, demonstrating a clear strategic shift towards sustainable power generation.
