Thousands of devotees from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and across India have gathered at Talakaveri in Kodagu today to witness the sacred phenomenon of Kaveri Theerthodbhava—the divine birth of River Kaveri.
The auspicious event will occur at exactly 1:44 PM this afternoon at the Brahma Kundike (holy pond) within the Talakaveri temple nestled in the Brahmagiri Hills.
According to tradition, this sacred moment marks the appearance of holy water from the pond, symbolizing the manifestation of Goddess Kaveri.
The event coincides with Tula Sankramana, the first day of the Tula month as per the Hindu calendar, and is considered one of the most spiritually significant occurrences in southern India.
Revered as Dakshina Ganga (the Ganga of the South), River Kaveri holds immense cultural and ecological value. Legends say Sage Agastya created the river, worshipped as the goddess of life, prosperity, and purity.
The phenomenon of bubbling water at the Brahma Kundike is interpreted as the goddess’s annual reappearance, reaffirming her divine presence.
During the ceremony, the idol of Goddess Kaveri is adorned with gold ornaments, prayers are offered, and devotees take holy dips in the pond or collect its water to sanctify their homes.
The Kaveri Jatre, which accompanies the event, brings a festive air with traditional music, local cuisine, and cultural displays unique to Kodagu.
