Indian benchmark indices such as Nifty 50 and Sensex concluded the session slightly lower, reflecting broader selling pressure, particularly across consumer and technology-related sectors.
The key indices saw modest declines, with the NIFTY 50 closing down 0.23% at 25,227.35. Mirroring this trend, the BSE SENSEX recorded a loss of 0.21%.
Similarly, the broader market indices, such as the NIFTY 100, NIFTY 200, and NIFTY 500, also registered minor pullbacks of 0.22%, 0.16%, and 0.18% respectively.
Selling pressure was particularly intense in segments linked to consumer staples, durables, and technology. Among the sectoral indices, the NIFTY MIDSMALL IT & TELECOM index experienced the steepest decline, falling by 1.13%.
The general IT sector also struggled, with the NIFTY IT index declining 0.78%.
The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector contributed significantly to the market drag, as the NIFTY FMCG index dropped 0.90%.
This negative sentiment extended into the consumer space, evidenced by the NIFTY CONSUMER DURABLES index, which shed 0.84% during the session.
Analysis of the Sensex components reveals the degree of downside was primarily driven by automotive and consumer stocks. Tata Motors was the most significant underperformer, recording a substantial decline of 2.67%.
Hindustan Unilever also faced considerable pressure, closing 1.46% lower. Meanwhile, technology major Infosys dropped 1.40%, contributing to the weakness seen across the broader technology indices.
Power transmission utility Power Grid (POWERGRID) and BEL also finished in the red, down 0.95% and 0.94% respectively.
Despite the generally negative market breadth, the Financial Services space offered crucial pockets of resilience and strength. The NIFTY MIDSMALL FINANCIAL SERVICES index significantly outperformed the market, registering a solid gain of 1.02%.
This positive trend was supported by the NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES EX-BANK index, which also advanced by 0.92%.
Individual stocks within the Sensex demonstrated strong buying interest. ADANIPORTS led the list of top gainers, advancing robustly by 2.04%.
Financial stocks were prominent among the gainers, with BAJFINANCE increasing by 1.32% and BAJAJFINSV adding 0.83%. Telecommunications major BHARTIARTL also closed higher, rising 0.80%, alongside AXISBANK, which saw a gain of 0.79%.
