The Indian stock market today witnessed a wave of selling pressure, primarily driven by a significant downturn in the technology sector.
The benchmark BSE Sensex ended the day lower by 558 points, closing at 83,674.92, while the Nifty 50 followed suit, slipping 0.57% to settle at 25,807.20.
The overall mood remained cautious as investors grappled with steep losses in heavyweight technology stocks that dragged the broader indices into the red.
The sector performance was clearly bifurcated, showing a sharp contrast between growth and value pockets.
The Nifty Information Technology index was the primary laggard, plummeting a sharp 5.51% as sentiment soured for the tech giants.
Other sectors like Nifty Realty and Nifty Media also felt the heat, dropping 1.45% and 1.31% respectively. The Nifty Oil & Gas index also underperformed, losing 1.19% during the session.
However, not all was bleak on Dalal Street. The Nifty Financial Services excluding Bank index managed to swim against the tide, gaining 0.75% to offer some respite to the indices. The Nifty Bank remained nearly flat, ending at 60,739.75, showing relative resilience compared to the broader market sell-off.
In the Sensex pack, the top losers were dominated by the tech giants, reflecting the sectoral carnage.
Tech Mahindra led the fall with a nearly 6% drop, followed closely by Infosys, which shed 5.79%. Tata Consultancy Services and HCL Technologies also saw significant cuts of 5.41% and 4.84% respectively.
Outside of tech, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hindustan Unilever were among the notable draggers.
On the flip side, Bajaj Finance emerged as the top gainer, rising a robust 3.17%. ICICI Bank and State Bank of India also found favor with investors, gaining 1.73% and 0.80% respectively.
Other pockets of strength included Trent, Bharat Electronics, and Titan, which managed to close in the green despite the general market gloom.
