It was a day of consolidation on the stock market today as the primary indices traded within a narrow range, ultimately ending the session with minimal changes.

The Sensex and Nifty 50 appeared to be in a tug-of-war between optimistic bulls in the healthcare space and cautious bears in the retail and power sectors, reflecting a neutral mood across the broader market.

The benchmark Sensex edged down slightly, losing 27.46 points or 0.03% to finish at 82,248.61. In contrast, the Nifty 50 managed to keep its head just above water, gaining 14.05 points (0.06%) to close at 25,496.55.

While the headline indices remained largely static, the underlying sector performance told a more dynamic story, with mid-cap and banking indices showing more signs of life than the heavyweights.

Defensive plays were the order of the day. The Nifty Healthcare Index was the standout performer, climbing 1.24%, followed closely by the Nifty Pharma index, which rose 1.08%.

This surge in interest for pharma stocks suggests investors are looking for safety amidst global uncertainty.

The financial space saw a divergence in sentiment. While the Nifty PSU Bank index gained 0.95%, reflecting renewed confidence in state-owned lenders, the broader private banking space was more muted.

Nifty Auto and Nifty Oil & Gas also provided support to the market, gaining 0.80% and 0.87% respectively. On the flip side, the Nifty Media index dragged, sliding 0.68% as it failed to find buying interest.

Among the top gainers on the Sensex, Bharat Electronics Limited (Bel) led the pack with a solid 2.21% gain. Adani Ports and Sun Pharma also saw healthy buying, rising 1.45% and 1.18% respectively.

Maruti and Bharti Airtel also featured in the green, while State Bank of India (Sbi) outperformed its private-sector peers with a 0.75% uptick.

Conversely, the list of top losers was headlined by Trent, which tumbled 1.79%. Power Grid and Eternal also faced selling pressure, dropping 1.20% and 1.54%.

Hdfc Bank and Asian Paints saw marginal declines, ending the day nearly 1% lower as investors locked in gains.
