It was a day of mild consolidation for the stock market today as the Indian benchmark indices snapped their recent winning streak. The overall mood on Dalal Street turned cautious, with investors choosing to book profits in heavyweight sectors following a period of sustained gains.
The BSE Sensex ended the session lower by 322.39 points, closing at 85,439.62, while the Nifty 50 settled at 26,250.30, representing a decline of 0.30%.
Sector performance: IT and banking feel the heat
The sector performance was a tale of two halves. The Nifty Information Technology index was the primary drag on the market, sliding by 1.43% as global sentiment remained tepid.
Major tech players featured prominently among the top losers, with Infosys dropping 2.09% and HCL Technologies falling 2.00%. Tata Consultancy Services and Tech Mahindra also faced selling pressure, ending the day in the red.
The banking sector provided little support, as the Nifty Bank fell by 0.18%. The decline was largely exacerbated by HDFC Bank, which emerged as the biggest laggard on the Sensex, shedding 2.35%. Additionally, the Nifty Oil & Gas index retreated by 1.02%, further weighing on the broader sentiment.
Realty and metals provide a silver lining
Despite the sombre tone in the headline indices, several pockets of the market showed remarkable resilience. Nifty Realty was the star of the day, surging by 2.07% as investors remained bullish on the property cycle.
Nifty Consumer Durables also posted a healthy gain of 1.12%, while the Nifty Metal and Nifty Media indices managed to close in positive territory.
In terms of individual stocks, Bharat Electronics emerged as the leader among the top gainers, climbing 2.65%. Traditional heavyweights also saw buying interest at lower levels; UltraTech Cement, Tata Steel, and Hindustan Unilever all gained over 1.5%, providing some much-needed cushion to the falling market. The BSE Bharat 22 Index also managed a marginal gain of 0.06%, bucking the trend of the larger benchmarks.
