It was a day of deep crimson on the Indian stock market today as domestic benchmarks buckled under intense selling pressure, wiping out significant investor wealth in a single session.
The overall mood was somber, with the Sensex crashing by more than 1,000 points and the Nifty 50 struggling to hold onto key levels as a broad-based sell-off gripped the floor.
By the closing bell, the Bse Sensex stood at 82,626.76, down a staggering 1,048.16 points, or 1.25%. Its peer, the Nifty 50, followed a similar trajectory, shedding 336.10 points to end the day at 25,471.10.
The pain was even more acute in the mid-market segment, where the Nifty Next 50 tumbled over 1.5%, indicating that the bearish sentiment was not just restricted to the heavyweights but was felt across the board.
The sector performance painted a bleak picture, with almost every major index finishing in the red. Leading the downward charge was the Nifty Realty index, which plummeted 2.23% as investors booked profits in a cooling property market sentiment.
The Nifty FMCG sector also faced significant heat, dropping 1.90%. This was largely driven by a sharp decline in Hindustan Unilever, which emerged as one of the day’s top losers, sliding 4.35%.
Other heavyweight sectors like Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty IT also dragged the benchmarks lower, falling 1.88% and 1.44% respectively. Even the usually resilient Nifty Bank could not escape the carnage, ending nearly 1% lower at 60,186.65.
In a sea of red, Bajaj Finance was a rare standout, topping the top gainers list with a solid 2.43% rise. The State Bank of India also showed remarkable resilience, managing to eke out a 0.53% gain while most of its peers faltered.
However, these gains were far outweighed by the losers. Beyond the slump in Hindustan Unilever, the market was weighed down by Eternal, which crashed 4.26%, and Tata Steel, which fell 2.35%.
Other blue-chip names like Titan, TCS, and Reliance also saw significant selling, contributing to the overall sense of unease on the trading floor.
