Reduction in Coal Imports and Increase in Domestic Coal Production

India has reduced its coal imports as of April-October FY 2024-25. Import has accounted for a decrease of 3.19% this year to 149.39 million tonnes (MT) as compared to 154.17 MT during the same period last year. The Other than Regulated Sector (NRS)-steel, cement, etc.-witnesses an even sharper decrease by 8.8%. This is all before going to self-sufficiency in producing coal to avoid becoming costly importing fuel types.

In fact, though coal-based power generation raised 3.87%, those imports for blending purposes by thermal power plants saw a deep 19% decline. Evidently, the government’s endeavor to stress domestic resources to address energy needs could be borne out by this. The use of domestic coal in generation is also a significant factor bringing down the dependence on imports, though energy demands are rising.

Apart from these, actual growth in domestic coal production was quite impressive during this period, with production hitting 537.57 MT, alone accounting for 6.04% growth over last year’s 506.93 MT. This increase stands as testimony to the initiative of translating the operations into reality through augmenting production capacity, thereby ensuring the economy of the nation in domestic coals.

With strategies related to improving domestic production and reducing outflow of foreign currency, India is steadily moving towards energy independence. These measures would thus ensure energy security as well as sustainability to India energy sector.
