It was a bruising session for the stock market today as Indian benchmark indices buckled under significant selling pressure, wiping out recent gains.
The Bse Sensex tumbled 0.92% to close at 84,180.96, while the Nifty 50 faced a steeper decline, sliding 1.01% to finish the day at 25,876.85.
The overall mood on the trading floor was one of caution and retreat, as investors appeared to pull back amidst a broad-based sell-off that spared very few corners of the market.
Sector Performance: Metals and Energy Lead the Slide
The sector performance painted a grim picture, with cyclicals and heavyweights bearing the brunt of the onslaught. The Nifty Metal index was the day’s biggest dragger, plunging 3.40% as global commodity concerns likely dampened sentiment.
Not far behind was Nifty Oil & Gas, which shed 2.84%, reflecting volatility in the energy space.
Technology and banking also faced headwinds; the Nifty It index dropped nearly 2%, while the Nifty Psu Bank index fell 2.08%.
Even the broader market felt the pinch, with the Bse Sensex Next 50 sliding 1.72% and the Bse Bharat 22 Index retreating 2.15%, suggesting that the bearish sentiment was deeply entrenched across mid and large-cap segments.
Top Gainers and Losers: Icici Bank Stands Tall Amidst the Rout
In a market dominated by bears, finding top gainers was a difficult task. However, Icici Bank managed to buck the trend, gaining 0.48% to provide some much-needed support to the Nifty Bank, which performed relatively better than the broader market with a 0.51% dip.
Another rare bright spot was Eternal, which climbed 0.91% during the session.
Conversely, the list of top losers was extensive, with significant value eroded in metal and energy stocks. The Nifty Mid-Small Financial Services index also struggled, falling 1.80%, as risk appetite for smaller financial players evaporated during the day’s trade.
As Dalal Street heads into the next session, the focus will remain on whether the Nifty 50 can find a firm floor near current levels or if the technical damage will lead to further corrections.
