The Indian stock market today witnessed a robust performance, with benchmark indices finishing the session with significant gains as optimism swept across the trading floor.
The overall mood remained decidedly bullish, reflected in a broad-based rally that saw the BSE Sensex surge by 638.12 points, or 0.75%, to close at a record 85,567.48.
Similarly, the Nifty 50 maintained its upward trajectory, climbing 206 points to end the day at 26,172.40. This positive sentiment was bolstered by strong buying interest in large-cap stocks, pushing the market into uncharted territory.
In terms of sector performance, the technology sector was the undisputed star of the day. The Nifty IT index spearheaded the charge, jumping 2.06% as investors regained confidence in software exporters.
This move was supported by stellar gains in Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Technologies, which all featured prominently among the leaders. Beyond tech, the Nifty Chemicals and Nifty Metal sectors also showed resilience, both posting gains of over 1.4%.
The retail and telecom segments added further fuel to the fire. Trent emerged as the standout performer among the top gainers, soaring 3.56%, while Bharti Airtel also provided significant momentum with a 2.43% rise. The healthcare space also participated in the rally, with the Nifty Pharma index gaining 0.78%, supported by a 1.50% climb in Sun Pharma.
However, the rally was not entirely universal, as some banking heavyweights faced minor pressure. While the Nifty Bank managed to close 0.40% higher at 59,304.00, the list of top losers was headlined by the State Bank of India and Kotak Bank, which dipped by 0.60% and 0.44% respectively. These slight pullbacks in the banking sector acted as a minor drag on an otherwise exuberant day for Dalal Street.
With the benchmark indices hitting fresh highs and the Nifty Next 50 also gaining nearly 0.7%, the market appears to be in a position of strength. The shift towards IT and defensive sectors like Pharma suggests that while investors are chasing growth, they are also keeping an eye on stability.
