Market Wrap: Sensex & Nifty Pause; IT Sell-off Offsets Auto & Healthcare Gains

Dalal Street witnessed a day of quiet consolidation during the stock market today, with the benchmark indices ending near the flatline. It was a classic tug-of-war between strong buying in domestic-facing sectors and a significant sell-off in heavyweight technology stocks.

The Nifty 50 managed to eke out a minor gain of 18.70 points, or 0.07%, to close at 25,953.85. Meanwhile, the Sensex surrendered its early momentum, finishing the session marginally lower by 40.28 points at 84,233.64.

The sector performance was a tale of two halves. The healthcare and automotive sectors provided the much-needed muscle to the indices.

The Nifty Healthcare index emerged as the top performer, surging 1.62%, while Nifty Auto followed closely with a 1.30% gain. On the flip side, the technology sector acted as the primary anchor.

The Nifty IT index slumped 1.76% as investors turned cautious on global growth prospects, leading to profit booking in high-growth tech names.

Looking at individual stocks, State Bank of India led the pack of top gainers, jumping 3.40% as sentiment improved for public sector lenders, pushing the Nifty PSU Bank index up by 1.03%.

Maruti Suzuki also saw robust buying interest, rising 1.70%, while Indigo and Reliance Industries provided additional support to the upside.

However, the pressure from the “Big Tech” majors was too significant to ignore. Tata Consultancy Services was the biggest laggard among the top losers, sliding 2.51%.

Other IT giants like Infosys and HCL Technologies also faced heat, falling 1.75% and 1.34% respectively. Consumer giant ITC and Axis Bank also ended the day in the red, adding to the slight downward pressure on the Sensex.

While the main indices were range-bound, the broader market showed more character. The Nifty Next 50 rose 0.55%, and the BSE Sensex Next 50 climbed 0.39%, suggesting that mid-tier and large-cap-adjacent stocks are still finding favor with investors.
