The Indian stock market today witnessed a spirited performance as domestic indices shook off recent jitters to end firmly in the green.
The overall mood on Dalal Street was one of renewed optimism, with investors cheering a broad-based recovery led by financial and industrial heavyweights.
The BSE Sensex surged by 479.95 points, or 0.58%, to close at a robust 83,294.66. Not to be outdone, the Nifty 50 climbed 141.75 points, ending the session at 25,713.00, marking a gain of 0.55%.
The steady climb throughout the day suggested a return of risk appetite, even as certain pockets of the market faced selling pressure.
The story of the day was the divergent sector performance. The Nifty PSU Bank index emerged as the top performer, jumping 1.36% as investors flocked back to state-run lenders.
The Nifty Auto index followed closely, rising 0.83%, buoyed by positive sentiment in the manufacturing and consumer discretionary space. Other sectors like Nifty 500 Healthcare and Nifty FMCG also lent support, gaining 0.78% and 0.70% respectively.
However, the tech corridor remained under a cloud. The Nifty IT index was a significant drag on the market, tumbling 1.42% as global cautiousness seemed to weigh on the sector.
Similarly, the Nifty Chemicals and the Nifty MidSmall IT & Telecom indices saw declines of over 1.40%, indicating that the rally was not entirely universal.
Among the top gainers on the Sensex, Adani Ports took the lead with a sharp 2.98% rise. The banking sector provided the necessary muscle to sustain the rally, with Kotak Mahindra Bank gaining 2.22% and Axis Bank rising 1.34%.
UltraTech Cement and Power Grid also featured prominently in the winner’s circle, adding 1.65% and 1.49% to their respective tallies.
On the flip side, the list of top losers was dominated by tech giants. Infosys was the biggest laggard, shedding 1.80%, while Tech Mahindra dropped 1.06%. Trent also faced some profit-taking, ending the day 0.86% lower.
