Tata Power Expands Bhutan Hydropower Project to 5,033 MW

Tata Power has expanded its hydropower project in Bhutan to 5,033 MW through a partnership with Druk Green Power Corporation, adding a new 404 MW Nyera Amari I & II Integrated Hydropower Project to the existing pipeline.

According to a BSE filing, the company has signed an amendment to its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DGPC to develop at least 4,500 MW of hydropower projects in Bhutan. This expansion is in line with Bhutan’s vision to increase its energy sector capacity to 25,000 MW by 2040.

The Nyera Amari I & II Integrated Hydropower Project is a significant addition to the existing project pipeline, which includes the Khorlochhu (600 MW) and Dorjilung (1,125 MW) hydropower projects. These projects will be developed with mutually agreed equity participation, and both companies will continue to evaluate and add new hydropower opportunities over time.

The expansion of the partnership between Tata Power and DGPC signifies the company’s pre-eminence as a clean energy partner in the region. This strategic partnership will help unleash Bhutan’s great potential for hydropower and play a critical role in enhancing regional energy security.

The agreement was formally signed by Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power, and Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director, DGPC. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from both companies, as well as the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bhutan.

This expansion reinforces Tata Power’s position as a leading player in the clean energy sector, and is expected to contribute significantly to the company’s growth in the coming years.
