It was a bruising day for the Indian stock market today as a wave of selling pressure swept across the board, leaving investors searching for cover.
The BSE Sensex experienced a sharp decline, tumbling by 1,065.71 points, or 1.28%, to settle at 82,180.47. The Nifty 50 mirrored this somber sentiment, shedding 353 points to close at 25,232.50, marking a 1.38% drop for the session.
The overall mood was distinctly “risk-off,” as the benchmark indices struggled to find support amidst widespread profit-booking and cautious sentiment.
The sector performance was almost entirely dominated by the bears, with nearly every major index finishing in negative territory.
The Chemicals sector was the hardest hit, plunging 2.85%, closely followed by Consumer Durables, which dropped 2.80%. The Nifty Auto index also felt the heat, sliding 2.48% as major manufacturers faced selling pressure.
Technology and Healthcare stocks, often considered defensive plays, were not spared either. The Nifty IT index fell by 2.06%, while the Nifty Healthcare Index declined by 2.14%.
The financial space also showed significant weakness; while the Nifty Bank dropped by 487.15 points, the Nifty Financial Services Ex-Bank index saw a much steeper decline of 2.51%.
Top Gainers And Losers: HDFC Bank Stands Alone
In a market dominated by sellers, HDFC Bank emerged as the lone warrior among the top gainers, managing a modest increase of 0.38%. Unfortunately, the list of top losers was much longer and more impactful.
Bajaj Finance led the downward spiral with a 3.88% loss, followed by Sun Pharma, which saw its shares drop by 3.68%.
Other prominent names dragging down the indices included Bajaj Finserv, Indigo, and Trent, all of which lost roughly 3% of their value. Large-cap stalwarts such as Mahindra & Mahindra (-2.83%), Asian Paints (-2.75%), and Tata Steel (-2.50%) further weighed on the Sensex and Nifty 50.
The broader market also felt the pinch, with the BSE Sensex Next 50 falling a significant 2.23%, highlighting that the pain was widespread across mid-cap and large-cap segments.
