It was a somber day for the Indian stock market as investors faced a wave of selling pressure that pulled the benchmark indices significantly lower.
The market mood turned decidedly bearish as the Bse Sensex tumbled by 769.67 points, or 0.94%, to settle at 81,537.70. Similarly, the Nifty 50 struggled to hold its ground, slipping 241.25 points to close at 25,048.65.
This cautious sentiment was mirrored across the broader market, with the Bse Sensex Next 50 experiencing an even sharper decline of 1.81%.
The sector performance was predominantly in the red, with the Nifty Realty index emerging as the biggest drag, crashing by 3.34%. The Nifty Media and Nifty Public Sector Bank indices also faced significant heat, dropping 2.51% and 2.27% respectively.
The banking space remained under pressure throughout the session; the Nifty Bank fell by over 727 points, weighed down by heavyweights like Axis Bank and State Bank of India.
Among the top losers, Adani Ports witnessed a sharp correction of 7.52%, leading the downward charge alongside Eternal and Interglobe Aviation (Indigo). Other notable laggards included Bajaj Finserv, Power Grid, and Maruti, as profit-booking seemed to be the order of the day across diverse industries.
Despite the gloom, the Information Technology pack provided a silver lining, acting as a defensive shield for the indices. The top gainers list was dominated by IT giants, with Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and Hcl Technologies all managing to close in the green.
Consumer staple major Hindustan Unilever also found favor among buyers, gaining 0.92% as investors rotated capital into more stable, defensive bets amidst the volatility.
