The Indian stock market today witnessed a wave of profit booking, snapping a period of sustained optimism as the benchmark indices settled in the red,.
The overall mood on Dalal Street was one of cautious consolidation, with investors appearing to lock in gains following recent record highs.
The Sensex ended the day lower by 367.25 points, while the Nifty 50 struggled to maintain its momentum, closing at 26,042.30.
In terms of sector performance, Information Technology and Telecom were the primary draggers during the session, with the Nifty Information Technology index dropping 1.03%.
Similarly, the Nifty MidSmall Information Technology & Telecom index saw a decline of 1.12% as sentiment soured for the tech pack. The Automotive and Financial Services sectors also faced headwinds, ending the day in negative territory.
On the flip side, the Metal sector emerged as a pocket of resilience, gaining 0.59% to defy the broader market trend. The Bombay Stock Exchange Bharat 22 Index also managed to stay in positive territory, albeit with modest gains of 0.12%.
Looking at individual movers, the top gainers were led by Titan, which rose a notable 2.13% to lead the pack. National Thermal Power Corporation also showed strength, gaining 0.45% amidst the sea of red.
Conversely, the list of top losers was topped by Bajaj Finance, which fell 1.48%, closely followed by Asian Paints, which dropped 1.41%. Heavyweights in the tech and pharma space, including Tata Consultancy Services, Eternal, Tech Mahindra, and Sun Pharmaceutical, also faced significant heat, dragging the indices lower as the session progressed.
