Dalal Street displayed notable resilience today, with benchmark indices overcoming bouts of volatility to end the session on a positive note.
The stock market today witnessed a steady climb as the BSE Sensex rose by 187.64 points, or 0.23%, to settle at a closing high of 83,570.35.
Similarly, the Nifty 50 managed to hold its ground, gaining 0.11% to end at 25,694.35, reflecting a cautious yet optimistic sentiment among investors.
The day’s narrative was dominated by a stellar sector performance in the information technology space. The Nifty IT index was the undisputed star of the session, surging 3.34% as investors flocked to heavyweight tech stocks.
This rally was spearheaded by top gainers such as Infosys, which jumped 5.65%, and Tech Mahindra, which followed closely with a 5.17% gain. HCL Technologies and Ultratech Cement also provided significant support to the upside.
Banking stocks further bolstered the market’s mood. The Nifty Bank crossed a psychological milestone, closing above 60,000 with a gain of 0.86%. Within this space, the Nifty PSU Bank index rose by 1.16%, supported by State Bank of India, which climbed 1.36%.
Additionally, mid and small-cap financial services showed strength, gaining 1.45% during the session.
However, the gains were capped by persistent selling pressure in other pockets of the market. The healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors acted as the primary draggers, with the Nifty Pharma index and the Nifty Healthcare index both sliding by more than 1.1%.
Among the top losers on the Sensex, Eternal saw a sharp decline of 3.89%, while Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, and Maruti also faced a downturn, losing between 1.7% and 2%. The consumer durables segment also struggled, finishing the day 1.11% lower.
The market’s ability to finish in the green despite weakness in pharmaceuticals and consumer goods suggests that the underlying trend remains constructive.
