Sun Pharma Wins South African Approval to Manufacture and Market Generic Semaglutide

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited has received approval from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to manufacture and market a generic version of semaglutide injection in South Africa.

According to a BSE filing, the approval is for the treatment of adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise.

The company plans to launch the product in the market in the coming days, offering a pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen in two strengths. This development reflects Sun Pharma’s ability to develop complex generic medicines that meet stringent quality standards across different markets.

The approval is significant, given the growing burden of type 2 diabetes in South Africa, driven by rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles. Improving access to effective therapies is crucial in addressing this national health challenge.

As part of its commitment to improving access to generics, Sun Pharma remains dedicated to making evidence-based treatment options available to patients and healthcare professionals. The company’s high growth Global Innovative Medicines portfolio spans innovative products in dermatology, ophthalmology, and onco-dermatology.

This approval reinforces Sun Pharma’s position as a leading global pharmaceutical company, with a presence in Innovative Medicines, Generics, and Consumer Healthcare products.
