The stock market today witnessed a cautious end to the month as the benchmark indices failed to sustain higher levels, eventually closing in negative territory.
A wave of selling, particularly in heavyweights from the metal and information technology sectors, weighed heavy on investor sentiment throughout the session.
The BSE Sensex ended the day down by 296.59 points to settle at 82,269.78, while the Nifty 50 slipped by 98.25 points to finish at 25,320.65.
The sector performance was a tale of two halves, reflecting a clear divide between growth-oriented and defensive pockets. The Nifty Metal index was the primary laggard, crashing by a significant 5.21% as global commodity concerns appeared to weigh on the sector.
This sharp decline was mirrored in individual stock movements, with Tata Steel emerging as the most prominent of the top losers on the Sensex, shedding 4.57%.
The technology space also faced the heat, with the Nifty IT index closing 1.03% lower. Sector majors like HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, and Infosys all finished in the red, reflecting a broader cautiousness regarding the tech spending environment.
Financials didn’t fare much better, as the Nifty Bank and BSE Bankex both ended the day with losses, dragged down by a 2.10% drop in ICICI Bank.
Conversely, defensive sectors provided a much-needed cushion to the falling market. The Nifty Media and Nifty FMCG indices showed notable resilience, gaining 1.85% and 1.37% respectively.
Consumer-facing themes were the preferred choice for investors today, with the Nifty Consumer Durables index also gaining over 1%.
In a sea of red, Mahindra & Mahindra led the top gainers on the Sensex with a steady 1.38% rise, followed by State Bank of India which gained 1.23%. Other notable performers included ITC and Bharat Electronics, both of which managed to post gains of over 1%.
The movement in these stocks suggests that while the broader market sentiment remains shaky, there is still selective buying interest in the auto, banking, and consumption spaces.
