The Indian stock market today witnessed a spirited performance as investors shrugged off global jitters to drive the benchmarks higher.
The Sensex climbed 487.20 points to settle at 82,344.68, while the Nifty 50 mirrored this positive sentiment, gaining 0.66% to close at 25,342.75.
The overall mood was one of optimism, particularly in the broader market where the Nifty Next 50 surged by a remarkable 2.26%, indicating that the appetite for growth extends well beyond the heavyweight blue chips.
Sector performance played a pivotal role in today’s rally, with Nifty Metal and Nifty Chemicals emerging as the star performers, rising by 2.34% and 2.29% respectively.
The Nifty Media space also saw significant traction, jumping 2.13%. Financials remained a pillar of support, with the Nifty PSU Bank index gaining 1.68% and the BSE Bankex rising by 0.72%.
The BSE Bharat 22 Index, which tracks key public sector enterprises, was another standout, posting a gain of 2.64%.
Among individual stocks, Bharat Electronics Limited led the list of top gainers, skyrocketing 8.90% as defense-related sentiment remains buoyant.
Eternal and Bajaj Finance also saw strong buying interest, rising 5.09% and 2.20% respectively. Heavyweights like Power Grid, Mahindra & Mahindra, and UltraTech Cement provided further cushion to the indices.
However, it wasn’t a universal party on the trading floor. Asian Paints emerged as one of the top losers, dragging the index with a 4.34% drop.
The auto giant Maruti and pharmaceutical leader Sun Pharma also faced selling pressure, declining by 2.39% and 1.78%. Tech major Infosys and consumer staple giant Hindustan Unilever saw modest profit-taking, ending the day in the red.
